A family in mourning. A man in crisis. After the death of his dad, Michael is powerless and angry.

In a state of heartbreak, he confronts the difficult truths about his father’s legacy and the country that shaped him.

The story of a Black working class man searching for truth and confronting his relationship with Great Britain.

Taking up the concept of football, which is prevalent in both plays, inspiration was drawn from the era of football hooliganism, which became popular in the 1970s and 1980s, particularly among Millwall fans. Also, the Hillsborough Disaster in 1989, when fans were squatted over the fence and a shrine was set up for them.

The studio space was designed to evoke the atmosphere of a football stadium, including seating, spacing, materials, lighting... There was a lot of play to achieve that round shape, and in the end, the fence was changed to a curved shape to match and continue with the 3/4 of in-round seating. All this leaned into the concept of
A SHRINE TO THE DEATH OF ENGLAND.
