NYE VALLETTA CONCERT
Conceptual 2023 I Stage Designer
The New Year's Eve Valletta Concert is an annual event held in Malta's capital city and open to the public, featuring local artists. It occurs in St George's Square, surrounded by beautiful architecture on all four sides, two of which are particularly significant, the Main Guard Building and the Grandmaster's Palace. The square has long been associated with Malta's Carnival, welcoming colourful floats, marching bands and crowds, but it also hosts other events such as art exhibitions, flower festivals, concerts...

Given that the square's architecture is such an important part of its aesthetic, I wanted to use it as a starting point for both the stage's location and form. The Main Guard's location made it ideal for hosting the stage and facilitating a full 360-degree experience, as opposite to it is the Palace's façade which is used to project a festive animation.
Therefore, as part of the design, I really wanted to highlight the architecture of the Main Guard, particularly the middle six columns, and so both the geometry of the stage and the placement of the lighting should draw your attention to them. The white colour used for the stage helps by contrasting nicely with the stone of the architecture.
Four towers are also included in the design, spaced evenly around the square. Every day, four guards stand in front of the Palace, keeping an eye on the Palace and the surrounding square. These four towers, which stand high above the crowd and light up, represent the guards' power and their oversight of everything.
